FAS USDA: Wheat Import In South Africa To Increase By 38%

Wheat yield in South Africa will go down in 2017 – 2018, which will lead to 38% import growth on 2016 – 2017 according to FAS USDA's latest forecast.

The trend for reducing wheat crops in the country, which has been running for 20 years now, will remain in the new season too. More corn will be sowed instead.

In 2017 – 2018 (October - September), wheat areas in South Africa will be 0.48 mln hectares versus 0.508 mln hectares a year earlier. More favourable weather conditions may boost the yield up to 1.75 mln tons (1.91).

Domestic wheat consumption has been gradually growing for the past five years and will be 3.23 mln tons (3.2).

The import of wheat and its by-products will be 1.8 mln tons (1.3).

366,500 tons of wheat have been imported in the first five months of the current season mainly from Germany, Poland and Russia.
