In Egypt, wheat import is performed by state and private companies, and of corn and soybeans only by state-owned companies. The country's food import is controlled by three ministries, and in 2018 a new institution dealing with food safety will be established.
In 2016 wheat import into Egypt declined by 9.57%, a first decline for the past six years, according to Mediterranean Star For Trading. For these years wheat import into Egypt has been constantly growing and now reaches 10 million tonnes. The largest increase in import was marked in 2008 - 28%.
The leader among the wheat suppliers in Egypt is Russia with a share of 48.5% in 2016, followed by Ukraine with a share of 22.5%, Romania - 13% and France - 6.4%.
