Despite record yield, India will continue to import wheat

Despite record wheat yield, India will continue to import wheat - up to 4 million tonnes.

According to COFCO Agri, about 300,000 tonnes have already been purchased from Ukraine for export to India. Now the price of imported wheat under C&F terms is 18 rupees / kg and local wheat is at price of 20 rupees / kg.

For millers in the southern parts of the country, it is cheaper to import wheat than to transport it from the northern states of Punjab, Haraja, Madhya Pradesh. At the same time, import from Australia will decrease due to the high prices of milling wheat.

In 2017 wheat crop in India is 96.6 million tonnes given 92.3 million tonnes in 2016.
