Grain Highlights 08.12.2020

According to AmSpec Agri Malaysia, exports of palm oil from Malaysia fell by 16.5% in November compared to October to a total of 1.42 million tons.

Wheat

- In the first five months of 2020/21, 2.2 million tons of wheat were exported from Ukraine to Indonesia, which is the same level of exports compared to the previous year.

- In November, 877,000 tons of soft wheat were exported from France to non-EU countries, which is 24.7% more than the record level in October. The largest importers of French soft wheat are:

  • China with 331,800 tons
  • Algeria-155,000 tons
  • Morocco- 94,800 tons
  • Egypt- 63,000 tons

188,200 tons of feed barley were also exported to China during the month.

- The authorities in Egypt have confirmed that as of 05.12.2020 the strategic stocks of wheat in the country are sufficient enough to meet domestic consumption for nearly 6 months. The previous similar news came out on 29.11.2020 and 2 days after a tender was held for the purchase of wheat. Something similar to this is likely to happen again, because in the last two tenders the deals were for the unusual amount of less than 200,000 tons. Egypt plans to increase areas  sown with wheat in 2021 to 1.47 million hectares from 1.42 million hectares a year earlier. By mid-November, the campaign had already taken place on 378,000 hectares. The harvest starts in mid-April.

- In their December estimate, ABARES analysts have raised their forecast for wheat exports from Australia in 2020/21 to 20.5 million tons, which is 10.8% more than the estimate in September and 2.2 times more than 2019/20. This is also the highest estimate for the last 4 seasons. The wheat production is predicted to reach 31.165 million tons (+7.8% and +200%).

 

Grain

- The Russian Grain Union predicts that the grain production in Russia will reach 123 million tons in 2020, which is the third highest amount in history. The wheat production is estimated at 79 - 80 million tons, which is 4-5 million tons less than 2020. The sowing of winter crops was carried out on 19.3 million hectares, which is 800,000 hectares compared to the previous year.

- During the week of 30.11 - 06.12.2020, 359,455 tons of grain were exported from the Russian port of Novorossiysk, which is 26% less than the previous week and 23.7% more than the previous year. The exported wheat was 350,450 tons (-10% and -20.6%). Exported barley amounted to 9,005 tons, which is 86.4% less than the previous week.

- As of 30.11.2020, the sowing of soft winter wheat has been completed in France (82% a year earlier). 96% of the crops are in good and excellent condition (96% a week earlier and 73% a year earlier). 94% of winter barley is in good and excellent condition (94% and 74%).

- ABARES analysts have raised their expectations of Australian barley exports in 2020/21 to 7 million tons in their latest forecast. This estimate is 13.8% higher than the forcast in September and 63.6% higher than 2019/20.  It is also the highest indicator for the last 4 seasons. Barley production is expected to reach 11.96 million tons (+6.6% and +32.8%). Australia relies on markets in Asia and the Middle East to offset the loss of Chinese customers.

- Algeria has purchased 35,000 tons of feed corn of any origin at a price of 245 USD / ton C&F and delivery up until 05.01.2021.

 

Oilseeds and vegetable oils

- In October, soybean exports from the United States reached 11.4 million tons, which is the highest monthly figure. A year earlier, exports were only 5.9 million tons. China accounted for 73% of  the exports.

- In the period September-October, soybean exports from Canada reached 1 million tons, which is twice as much as in the first two months of 2019/20. Exports were 811,800 tons in October, which is the highest monthly level since November 2019 so far. The largest customers are the Netherlands with a 22% share and Iran with a 20% share.

- According to ABARES, 2.7 million tons of canola will be exported from Australia in 2020/21, which is 71% more than the previous year. The EU remains the largest customer. The canola production is estimated at 3.7 million tons (+59% compared to 2019/20 and +12% compared to the average level for the last 10 years).

- According to AmSpec Agri Malaysia, palm oil exports from Malaysia in November fell by 16.5% compared to the previous month to a total of 1.42 million tons. According to ITS estimate, palm oil exports amounted to 1.41 million tons (-16.6%) and SGC belive they were 1.39 million tons (-18.9%).
