Grain Highlights 10.12.2020

Authorities in Russia are expected to introduce a new export duty of 30% on sunflower this week.

- According to the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia, the grain production in Russia will exceed 131 million tons in 2020, which is one of the highest figures in recent years.

- In the period July - October, exports of barley from Ukraine reached 3.7 million tons compared to 3.4 million tons a year earlier. In November alone, exports were 296,200 tons (+2.1 times compared to November 2019). According to APC-Inform, the export of barley from Ukraine is expected to be 4.2 million tons in 2020/21.

- In 2020, the sunflower production in Ukraine is 13.1 million tons compared to 15.268 million tons in 2019.

- According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture of France, the areas sown with winter crops are 6.6 million hectares in 2020, which is 11% more than the previous year and 4% less than the average level for the last five years. The areas sown with winter wheat reach 4.7 million hectares (+12% and -2%) and areas sown with barley- 1.3 million hectares (+ 7% and -6%). The areas sown with winter oilseed rape are predicted to reach 1.1 million hectares (+ 1% and -17%). The forecast for the corn production in the country for 2020 has been reduced by 0.4 million tons to 13.3 million tons compared to 13 million tons in 2019.

- According to Oil World, 1.13 million tons of canola were exported from Canada in October, which is 17% more than the previous month and almost 65% more compared to October 2019. The largest shares of the total canola exports from Canada in October have been taken by:

  • China- 301,000 tons of canola compared to 169,000 tons (October 2019)
  • UAE- 120,000 tonnes (34,000)
  • EU- 231,000 tonnes (154,000)
  • Pakistan- 140,000 tonnes (65,000)

In October, exports of canola meal reached 500,000 tons (377,000) and canola oil- 267,000 tons (311,000). During the period August - October, canola exports reach: 

  • canola- 2.9 million tons (+ 65%)
  • canola meal- 1.2 million tons (+ 7.7%)
  • canola oil- 797,000 tons (-7%)

- A ship with 30,500 tons of soy from the United States arrived in the Brazilian port of Parangua last week. According to Abiove, Brazil's soybean imports will amount to approximately 1 million tons this season, the highest level since 2008. Since the beginning of the season, imports have been 625,000 tons.

- Despite the decline in the wheat production in Argentina of 21 - 22 million tons in the initial estimates to 16.7 million tons now, the country's export potential remains high at 10 million tons. So far, 5.85 million tons of wheat from the new production have been sold.

- In October, 367,574 tons of wheat were exported from Australia, which is 17% less than in September and is the lowest monthly level since 2007.

- A group of South Korean millers KOFMIA has purchased 78,000 tons of wheat from the United States with delivery in March-April.

- The state company of Egypt, GASC, has announced a tender for the purchase of 40,000 tons of vegetable oils:

  • 30,000 tons of soybean oil
  • 10,000 tons of sunflower oil
