Grain Highlights 17.02.2021

On Feb 17, 2021, Algeria purchased 32,000 tons of soft wheat of any origin.

- Yesterday, commodity funds in Chicago were net buyers of 19,000 corn contracts, 10,000 soybean contracts and 11,000 wheat contracts.

- In January, US soybean crush reached 5.025 million tons, which is 4.2% more than in January 2019 and is the second result in history.

- Since the beginning of the season (July 1, 2020 to Feb 17, 2021), 13.245 million tons of wheat were exported from Ukraine (down 2.987 million tons compared to the same period in the previous season), 3.956 million tons of barley (-13 thd tons) and 12.879 million tons of corn (-4.792 million tons).

- According to the European Commission, in the week of Feb 8-14, rapeseed imports into the EU fell to 65,700 tons (140,400). The main importers were the Netherlands with 59,800 tons and Portugal with 5,600 tons. Since the beginning of the season, imports have reached 4.29 million tons (4.4) and the main suppliers have been:

  • Ukraine with 2.17 million tons
  • Canada with 1.62 million tons
  • Australia with 312,500 tons
  • Russia with 68,400 tons

Rapeseed oil exports were 17,200 tons (5,200) and they reach a total of 259,800 tons (99,200) since the beginning of the season. The main buyers were Norway with 116,700 tons, China with 80,300 tons and Israel with 31,100 tons.

- According to EuroStat estimates, Romanian farmers increased the area sown with winter rapeseed by 17% in 2021/22 compared to 2020/21. Given the good crop development and the sufficient soil moisture, the first forecasts for the rapeseed production are quite optimistic.

- According to Oil World, India reduced imports of essential vegetable oils to 1.09 million tons in January compared to 1.14 million tons in Jan 2020. The figure is the lowest for the last five years. Imports of sunseed reached 205,000 tons (287,000) and palm oil imports were 792,000 (550,000). India did not import any rapeseed oil in Jan 2021.

- On Feb 17, 2021, Algeria purchased 32,000 tons of soft wheat of any origin. The quantity is low because the country always buys over 300,000 tons of wheat at tenders and sometimes over 600,000 tons. Wheat was purchased at a price of 321 USD/ton C&F and delivery in March - April. At the previous tender, 660,000 tons of wheat were purchased at a price of 312 - 314 USD/ton C&F.

- The Philippine company SMC has announced a tender for the purchase of 145,000 tons of milling and feed wheat with delivery in April - June.
