Grain Highlights 24.05.2021

According to Refinitiv's forecast, wheat areas in Russia will be 28.26 million hectares in 2021 (29.4 million hectares in 2020). With an average yield, the wheat production will reach 78.6 million tons.

- According to the latest forecast of the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia, the total grain production in Russia will be 127.4 million tons in 2021/22(133.5 million tons in 2020/21), including wheat production of 80.7 million tons (85.9), barley production of 19.4 million tons (20.9) and corn production of 14.4 million tons (13.9).

- During the week of May 17-23, 130,300 tons of grain were exported from the Russian port of Novorossiysk, which is 16.5% less than the previous week and 5.4% less than the previous year. 92,300 tons of barley and 38,000 tons of corn were exported.

- During the week of May 17-23, 13,550 tons of sunseed oil were exported from Russian ports compared to 24,150 tons a week earlier.

- As of 20.05.2021, 4,882 million hectares with corn (91.6% of the plan) and 5,614 million hectares with sunseed (87.7%) have been sown in Ukraine.

- As of 01.05.2021, sunseed stocks in Ukraine were 2.02 million tons, which is 38% less than the previous year. Soybean stocks were 598,400 tons (+4%) and rapeseed stocks were 51,500 tons (-40%).

- According to data from FranceAgriMer, as of 17.05.2021, 97% of the planned corn areas have been sownin France. 79% of the winter wheat crops (79% a week earlier and 57% a year earlier) are in good and excellent condition.

- Forward sales of new wheat crop from the United States reached 3.577 million tons, which is 41% more than the previous year and is the highest level since 14.05.2013.

- During the week of May 10-16, exports of cereals and oilseeds from Canada decreased to 792,900 tons (1.14 million tons a week earlier). Exports of wheat were 381,900 tons (554,100) and durum exports were117,900 tons (105,700). Since the beginning of the season, total exports reach 43.36 million tons (+28%), including wheat exports of 16 million tons (+23%) and canola exports of 9.1 million tons (+17%).

- Anec has raised its forecast for soybean exports from Brazil in May from 11.96 million tons to 16.19 million tons. In April, exports were 15.67 million tons compared to 13.87 million tons in April 2020. In May, corn exports are projected at 29,700 tons compared to 22,000 tons in April.

- Agroconsult estimates the second corn crop in Brazil at 66.2 million tons compared to 78.3 million tons in the March forecast. The total corn production will reach 91.1 million tons, which will be the lowest level since 2017/18. Corn exports are expected at 26 million tons (35).

- According to data from the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange, the sowing of wheat from the new 2021/22 crop has started in Argentina. 3.5% or 6.5 million hectares of the planned areas have already been sown as of 19.05.2021 (-1.5% compared to 2020/21) . So far, there is a lack of moisture in the soil. As of 19.05.2021, 85.4% of the soybean crops have been harvested in Argentina, 38.7 million tons have been harvested at an average yield of 2.75 tons/hectare. Corn was harvested on 27.6% of the areas and a total of 14.68 million tons have been harvested.

- According to ABS, 759,600 tons of canola were exported from Australia in March, compared to 247,200 tons in February. The growth is due to reduced exports from the Black Sea region. The main customers were Belgium with 191,600 tons, the Netherlands with 130,000 tons and the United Kingdom with 66,000 tons. Over the period of January - March, exports reached 1.56 million tons.


- According to Oil World, 2.69 million tons of palm oil were exported from Indonesia in March compared to 2.12 million tons in March 2020. Palm oil exports from Indonesia in March:

  • China - 467,000 tons (158,000)
  • Malaysia - 181,000 tons (87,000)
  • Pakistan - 169,000 tons (101,000)
  • the United States - 116,000 tons (63)
  • Russia and Ukraine - 102,000 tons (59,000)
  • Egypt - 92,000 tons (47,000)
  • India - 360,000 tons (369,000)
  • the EU - 327,000 tons (391,000)

In the first quarter of 2021, exports reached 6.58 million tons (6.17) and since the beginning of the season exports add up to a total of 14.55 million tons (14.47).

- The Philippines has purchased 25,000 tons of feed wheat and 15,000 tons of feed barley from Australia. The wheat was bought at a price of 323 USD/ton C&F and delivery in the second half of August.

- During the period 1 - 19 May, 414,100 tons of wheat were delivered to Egypt (512,260 tons a month earlier).

- In mid-June, Saudi Arabia expects 60,000 tons of Australian wheat, which is part of a deal to made in February for the purchase of 355,000 tons of wheat from Australia, Canada and Ukraine.
