Grain Highlights 28.09.2021

In 2021/22, the areas sown with the 10 main oilseeds in the world will increase by 7.5 million hectares to 306 million hectares and production is projected to increase by 24.1 million tons.

- In August, a record 6.08 million tons of grain were exported from Russia, including 5.27 million tons of wheat , 557,000 tons of barley and 171,000 tons of peas. The main buyers were Turkey with 2.51 million tons, Iran with 1.79 million tons and Egypt with 980,000 tons. Over the period of 1.07 - 27.09.2021, 2.44 million tons of wheat were exported to Iran compared to 1.38 million tons for the whole 2020/21.

- According to a preliminary estimate of Ukroliyaprom, total oilseed production in Ukraine will reach 22 million tons in 2021, which is 20.1% more than 2020. The sunseed production is projected to reach 16 million tons (+24%). The rapeseed production is expected to increase by 9% and the soybean production is expected to go up by 11%.

- As of September 26, 2021, the harvesting campaign of sunseed has begun in the United States and 2% of the areas have already been harvested. Corn has been harvested on 18% of the areas and soybeans have been harvested on 16% of the areas.

- Yesterday, commodity funds in Chicago were net buyers of 12,000 contracts of corn and 2,000 contracts of soybeans and net sellers of 1,000 contracts of wheat.

- According to data from Safras & Mercado, as of September 24, 2021, 29.1% of the areas planned for the first production were sown with corn in Brazil (+7.3% for the week and 30.2% a year earlier). As of September 23, 2021, the new soybean crop was sown on 1.3% of the planned areas.

- According to Abitrigo, the millers from Brazil want permission from the government to stop buying GM wheat from Argentina and other countries. Brazil's wheat imports typically cover 60% of consumption, with Argentina accounting for 80%.

- In 2021/22, the areas with the 10 main oilseeds in the world will increase by 7.5 million hectares to 306 million hectares and production is expected to increase by 24.1 million tons. In general, oilseed stocks will fall and only soybean stocks are likely to increase. With reduced production of rapeseed oil, the demand for other oils will become higher. The price of palm oil remains high with forecasts of unstable production and export intensification. The price of palm oil is volatile because the market is experiencing a shortage of sunseed oil - a delay in harvesting in the Black Sea region, which directs buyers to the cheaper palm oil. Now, the FOB prices of sunseed oil in Ukraine range from 1,200 to 1,300 USD/ton due to the fact that farmers do not sell sunseed in anticipation of higher prices. The rapid progress of the harvesting campaign of soybeans in the United States and good yields are holding back the rise in soybean prices. More than 20 plants in China have closed due to the electricity crisis and excessive air pollution. This reduces the demand for soybeans but increases demand for soyoil. Overall, it looks like buyers are expecting a drop in oil prices.

- According to Oil World, the world's biodiesel production will reach 47.9 million tons in 2021, which is 0.6 million tons less than the previous estimate. Production in the United States is estimated at 8.6 million tons (7.85 in 2020). Biodiesel production in Brazil is estimated at 5.9 million tons (5.62). In Indonesia, biodiesel production is expected to reach 7.6 million tons (7.35) and 0.93 million tons in Malaysia (1.11).

- Ethiopia has announced a tender for the purchase of 200,000 tons of milled wheat. In 2021/22, the wheat production in the country is expected to reach 5.2 million tons (+1.6% compared to 2020/21).
