FAS USDA: Wheat Import In Thailand 17% Lower

In 2017 – 2018 wheat import in Thailand will go 17% down compared with the previous year to 3 mln tons according to USDA's latest forecast.

Due to the introduced limits, wheat fodder import has dropped by 27% to 1.6 mln tons. After January 19, 2017, authorities permission is required for the import of wheat fodder in the country. The step was so as to local corn farmers to be protected. You are allowed to import 1 ton of wheat fodder only after you purchase and use 3 tons of local corn bought at 227 USD/ton or more.  

Milling wheat import will go down during the season by 3 -  4% to 1.2 mln tons with increased domestic demand.

Wheat consumption in the country has decreased by 25% to 2.8 mln tons including wheat fodder consumption reduced to 1.5 mln tons (-40%). Milling wheat consumption will increase by +7% to 1.3 mln tons.

Corn yield in Thailand will go down by 6% in 2017 – 2018. High domestic demand will lead to import growth and export reduction according to information by FAS USDA.

Corn yield will drop to 4.9 mln tons (5.2 mln tons in 2016 – 2017г) as a result of decreased areas.

Domestic corn consumption remains high – 5.4 mln tons and import will be 0.7 mln tons (0.6). Corn export will be 0.5 mln tons (0.4).
