North Africa And The Middle East With Increased Demand For American Wheat

Weekly American 2016 wheat export sales were at the upper end of the expectation level – 250,000 – 450,000 tons. The result has been achieved despite the large volume of cancelled contracts.

Large wheat volumes were bought by countries from Northern Africa and the Middle East, which is a sign for the high competitiveness of American wheat. The latest big contract was with Saudi Arabia – 120,000 tons of hard wheat.

Since the start of the season, the total export sales have been 36.1% above last year's level (36.7% a week earlier). It is worth mentioning that new harvest wheat sales have been lower since the start of the current season. 1.063 mln tons of new wheat were sold before March 16, 2017, which was 9% less than last year.

The biggest buyers during the week were Japan with 122,400 tons, Algeria with 120,000 tons, Mexico with 69,100 tons, China with 66,000 tons and Saudi Arabia with 60,000 tons. Earlier signed contracts were cancelled by an unspecified buyer with 221,600 tons, Singapore with 16,300 tons and Honduras with 8,500 tons.

The biggest wheat deliveries during the week were made to Japan with 147,100 tons, China with 126,000 tons, Mexico with 101,600 tons, the Philippines with 53,800 tons and South Korea with 39,400 tons.
