South Africa Looking Forward To A Record Soybean And Sunflower Yield In 2017 – 2018

According to the latest estimates by the National Crop Estimates Committee, soybean yield in South Africa will reach the record 1.16 mln tons in 2017 – 2018 (+57% versus 2016 – 2017).

Yield growth will be due to +25% higher production of up to 2,030 kg/hectare, which is higher than the average level for the past 4 years. If the forecast is achieved, the local grain processors will meet their demand with local soybean only.

Sunflower yield will be 896,000 tons (929,000), which is a record high level and it is +19% above last year's results. Sunflower area reduction (-12% versus last year) will be compensated by production growth of +21%. With a yield this big, grain processors will import less sunflower during the season.
