Saudi Arabia To Increase Wheat Import In The Current Season

In the current season, Saudi Arabia will increse wheat import by 19% versus the previous season to 3.5 mln tons. Import growth will continue into the new season according to FAS USDA's latest forecast.

Since the start of the season, Saudi Grains Organization (SAGO), which is the only importer in the country, has carried out six auctions and purchased 3.5 mln tons of wheat, which is 21% more than the previous year.

1.688 mln tons of wheat (+52%) were imported in the country in the first five months of the season. Import growth is based on last year's low results as well as the increased wheat demand in the country.

Poland with a share of 39% is the biggest importer in Saudi Arabia followed by Germany with 27% and Litva with 20%. In 2015 – 2016 Litva was the biggest supplier with a share of 34%.

Over the whole season import will reach 3.5 mln tons of wheat (+19%). In the new season, import will reach 3.7 mln tons.
