Winter wheat in the US may be low on protein

The first results of the quality check of new crop hard wheat in the US confirmed the concerns about low protein content for a second consecutive year.

According to Plains Grains Inc, that performs weekly tests of wheat samples, the first 14 examinations found an average protein level of 10.6%. In 2016  protein content in HRW was at record low - only 11.2%. Now the figure will be even weaker.

Plains Grains Inc. plans to perform 500 samples’ tests during the campaign and states that the first results may not correctly reflect the final protein level. For the production of quality flour mixing with the more expensive spring wheat will be needed.

Now US farmers end the spring wheat sowing. Areas under spring wheat cultivation will not be increased because alternative crops such as soybeans and corn are more cost-effective.

According to USDA, 65% of the corn crops in the US are in good and excellent condition, given 72% a year earlier. As of May 28th, 2017 in the US, 91% of the planned areas are sown, given 93% last year and on average over the past five years.

In the past week, the condition of winter wheat crops has deteriorated. In good and excellent condition are 50% of the crops, given 52% a week earlier and 63% a year earlier.
