India increases the grain production by 2%

Grain production in India rises by 2%, while import remains at low level. Grain yields in the country will reach 307.25 mln tonnes, by 2% more than the previous year.

Wheat harvest is almost completed. Yield rose to the record 97.4 million tonnes, up by 6% compared to the previous year. Growth is due to larger areas under wheat cultivation - 31.8 million hectares (+ 8%).

Farmers now sow rice and corn. Rice crop is expected to reach 165.5 million tonnes, given 163.7 million tonnes last year. Corn crop will be close to last year's record - 26.1 million tonnes.

In 2017 - 2018 (April - March) export from India will remain at a low level - 12.2 million tonnes, which is below the five-year average. Wheat export will be 0.5 million tonnes, which is close to the previous year and below the average five-year level of 3.6 million tonnes. In 2017 - 2018 export of corn will be 0.85 million tonnes, which is a 34% rise in the current season. Export of rice grows by 8% to 10.8 million tonnes.

Import of wheat is reduced to 2.5 million tonnes due to the very good domestic yields.
