DEFRA: Great Britain will be a net wheat importer for the current season

In the current season Great Britain will turn to a net wheat importer from net wheat exporter - a scenario that happened only 4 times for the last 25 years.

The reason for this is the higher consumption of wheat for the production of ethanol.

During the season, wheat export will not exceed 1.5 million tonnes, which is 47% less than last year.

Import of wheat exceeded expectations and reached 1.7 million tonnes, which is one of the best indicators in history.

Domestic wheat demand will reach the record 15.69 million tonnes (+ 6%), with a record 8.11 million tonnes of wheat (+ 10%) used  for bioethanol production.
