The EU: winter barley crop will fall compared to 2016

Winter barley crop in the EU will reach 58 million tonnes, by 1.6 million tonnes less then the May forecast and by 2 million tonnes less the the 2016 crop.

In France, 60-65% of the areas of barley have been already harvested. Analysts expect the crop to reach 9.5 million tonnes at an official forecast of 9.3 million tonnes and 8.2 million tonnes in the previous season. The quality of winter barley is good.

In Spain, colds have damaged winter barley crops. The harvest will drop by 47% compared to last year to 4.9 million tonnes

In Germany, the production of winter barley used for feed consumption will decrease by 0.4% to 8.92 million tonnes. Production of spring barley will grow by 4.3% to 1.84 million tonnes in relation to larger areas.

In Poland rainfall slows down the harvest, which can grow by 35% compared to last year to 850,000 tonnes. Spring barley crop will fall by 3% to 2.65 million tonnes.
