Ukraine may lose the Egyptian wheat market

Ukraine may lose the Egyptian wheat market - the second largest market for the country.

In 2016 – 2017 Ukraine exported about 2.5 million tonnes of wheat to Egypt, which is approximately 14% of the total export - 17.5 million tonnes, according to UcraAgroConsult.

Concerns are that the Egyptian market can be completely lost, given Ukraine's inability to provide batches of such volume and specification that are required.

Authorities in Egypt increased the requirement for protein content from 11.5% to 12.5% for wheat purchased from Russia and Ukraine. This tilts the scales in favor of Russia.

Definitely Ukraine will have to seek a market in Asia after trade in Egypt is not going well this season.
