Grain Highlights

As of October 12, 2017 Brazilian farmers have sown 12% of the planned areas for soybean cultivation so far, at average level for the last years - 11%. The government expects the soybean crop to reach 106 – 108.2 million tonnes at 114 million tonnes in 2016/17.

Wheat

- In December, the Moroccan government will lower the import duty on common wheat from the current 135% to 30%. In 2016/17 wheat crop in the country reaches 4.9 million tonnes and at the beginning of October the stocks were 1.57 million tonnes - enough to satisfy domestic consumption for 3.5 months.

- In the new season the quality of wheat in Kazakhstan is higher than last year.

- Iraq is looking to purchase 50,000 tonnes of hard wheat. The best offer is at price of 301.27 USD / mt, for Australian wheat. The next offer is at price of 304.96 USD / mt for Canadian wheat.

- In November, Mongolia starts to import wheat from Russia.

- As of October 16, 2017 in Russia, 27 million hectares under wheatcultivation were harvested (97.8% of the area), 87.1 million tonnes of wheat were harvested at average yield of 3.23 mt/ ha (2.79 mt/ ha a year earlier).

 

Grain

- In the main corn producing provinces of China subsidies will be lowered. In the current year, the reduction will be by 13%. The soybean subsidy will be $20.3 for 0.067 hectares and for corn $15.6 for 0.067 hectares. No large scale growth of soybean areas is expected, due to high corn prices on international markets.

- In 2016/17 exports of corn from Russia grew by 13% compared to the previous season to 5.3 million tonnes, according to data of Rosselkhoznadzor . 908,000 tonnes of corn were exported to South Korea, 873,000 tonnes to Iran, and 852,000 tonnes to Vietnam. During the period July - September 2017, 759,300 tonnes of corn were exported from Russia, incl. to Turkey 265,000 tonnes, Iran 147,000 tonnes and Lebanon 70,000 tonnes.

- During the period July - September 2017. 22,200 tonnes of rye were exported from Russia given only 7,300 tonnes a year earlier. Major customers are Libya 19,000 tonnes and Israel 3,000 tonnes.

- The Russian Ministry of Agriculture expects grain crop in the country to reach 138 million tonnes of gross weight. Net weight of the crop will be 128 million tonnes.

- During the week of September 9-15 , 412,820 tonnes of grain were exported from the Russian port of Novorossiysk, which is 14.2% less than the previous week, according to Transagent data. 379,420 tonnes of wheat and 30,400 tonnes of corn were exported.

- The South Korean Kocopia purchased 60,000 tonnes of US corn at  price of 191.30 USD / mt, C & F for shipment until January 25, 2017.

- As of October 16, 2017, 44.2 million hectares under grain crops cultivation were harvested in Russia (93.9% of the areas), 131.4 million tonnes of grain are harvested at average yield of 2.97 mt/ ha (2.63 mt/ ha a year earlier). 1.3 million hectares under corn cultivation (46.2%) were harvested, 6.3 million tonnes of corn is harvested at average yield of 4.72 mt/ ha (5.49). barley - 7.7 million hectares (96.5) were harvested , 21.4 million tonnes of barley were harvested at average yield of 2.79 mt/ ha (2.35).

 

Oil crops and vegetable oils

- According to Oil World's forecast, global oil crops supply in the current season will increase by 22 million tonnes from 2016 to 2017 to 665 million tonnes due to global stocks to a record 113 million tonnes at 110.6 million tonnes last season . Ending soybean stocks will be 98 million tonnes (+2 million tonnes compared to the previous season). Oil crops production will be 554 million tonnes and consumption 552 million tonnes.

- In 2017/18 sunflower crop in Turkey reaches a record 1.55 million tonnes on 600,000 hectares. Compared to last year, crop is 20% larger and areas by 8%. Sunflower processing in Turkey will be 1,855 million tonnes in the new season. Import of sunflower oil will be 700,000 tonnes at 800,000 tonnes in 2016 - 2017, and export -  520,000 tonnes (650,000).

- As of October 16, 2017 3.6 million hectares under sunflower cultivation (46.9% of the areas) are harvested in Russia, 6.0 million tonnes of sunflower are harvested at average yield of 1.66 mt/ ha (1.64 mt/ ha a year earlier).
