Grain Highlights 19.01.2021

On 25.01.2021, representatives of the Ukrainian government and traders will discuss the need to introduce restrictions on the export of corn from Ukraine.

- Yesterday, commodity funds in Chicago were net buyers of soft wheat (+2,000) and net sellers of corn (-10,000) and soybeans (-12,000).

- In the week of 11 - 17 January, the EU exported 181,600 tons of wheat compared to 267,900 tons a week earlier. 117,300 tons of wheat were exported from Poland and 39,000 tons from France. The weekly import of corn was 302,000 tons (-40%) and since the beginning of the season, corn imports reach a total of 9.23 million tons (-26%).

- In the first 29 weeks of the season, 671,000 tons of sunflower were delivered to the EU, which is 36% more than the previous year and 2.4 times more than the same period in 2018/19.

The largest exporters of sunflower to the EU were:

  • Russia with a share of 274,000 tons
  • Moldova with a share of 159,000 tons
  • Ukraine with a share of 119,000 tons

The largest importers of sunflower in the EU were:

  • Bulgaria- 388,000 tons
  • Romania- 100,000 tons
  • the Netherlands- 64,000 tons

- According to the forecast of Oil World, world soybean exports will reach 169.3 million tons in 2020/21 compared to 166.7 million tons in 2019/20, including:

  • US- 62.1 million tons (45.6)
  • Paraguay- 6.4 million tons (+0.7)
  • Canada- 4.5 million tons (+1)
  • Brazil- 81.6 million tons (92.5)
  • Argentina- 7.7 million tons (11.4)
  • Ukraine- 1.9 million tons (2.6)
  • Russia- 0.9 million tons (1.1)

Soybean imports to China are projected at 101 million tons (98.4).

- For the period of Jan 1-15, 17,500 tons of soybeans were exported from Brazil compared to 630,000 tons a year earlier. The indicator for January is predicted to reach 290,000 tons (1.4 million tons). Exports are projected to increase in February due to the late harvest campaign. So far, only 0.4% of the soybean areas have been harvested, according to AgRural data (1.8% a year earlier).

- In the period July - November wheat exports from Russia reached 20.9 million tons (+13% compared to the previous year). The largest customer was Egypt with 4.2 million tons, followed by Turkey with 3.9 million tons.

- According to Rusagrotrans, wheat exports from Russia in 2020/21 are expected to reach 37.2 million tons (35.3 million tons in 2019/20).

- In 2020, 187,900 tons of sunflower were exported from Ukraine compared to 82,250 tons in 2019. The main importers of Ukrainian sunflower were:

  • Bulgaria- 102,230 tons
  • Turkey- 39,250 tons
  • Georgia- 4,890 tons
  • the Netherlands- 4,280 tons
  • Germany- 5,140 tons

- On 25.01.2021, representatives of the Ukrainian government and traders will discuss the need to introduce restrictions on the export of corn from Ukraine. The expected restriction for the season is an export of 21 - 22 million tons, which is within the forecasts of some analysts. Since the beginning of the season, 10.52 million tons of corn have already been exported.

- Algeria has announced a tender for the purchase of at least 50,000 tons of milling wheat of any origin with 15 - 28 February delivery.

- On January 19, 2021, a group of private companies from the Philippines held a tender for the purchase of 100,000 tons of feed wheat and 80,000 tons of feed barley with April-May delivery. The tender was canceled due to the high offered prices of 300 USD/ton C&F for wheat.
