Grain Highlights 11.02.2021

Due to the excellent rainfall in India, the wheat production is expected to reach record levels. In 2020, the wheat production was 107.6 million tons and this is the current record.

- In the first 7 months of the season, barley exports from Ukraine to China reached 2.6 million tons (798,500 tons for the same period last season and a total of 847,700 tons for the last season). This is a share of 32% of total Asian imports.

- FranceAgriMer has raised its forecast for the export of soft wheat from France in 2020/21 to 13.512 million tons, which is 0.7% more than the January forecast and 35.7% less than the previous year.

- Yesterday, commodity funds in Chicago were net sellers of 55,000 contracts of corn, 30,000 contracts of soybeans and 13,500 contracts of wheat.

- Heavy rainfall in Argentina last week caused the Rosario Grain Exchange to raise its forecast for the soybean production by 2 million tons to a total of 49 million tons and increase the estimate for the corn production by 2.5 million tons to 48.5 million tons. The soybean harvesting campaign will take place in the period of April - June and the corn harvesting campaing will take place over the period of February - April.

During the period April - December, exports were 976,083 tons and total export in 2019/20 were only 217,010 tons. Strong exports are now expected to Bangladesh (given the export tax imposed in Russia), which will import a total of 6.6 million tons of wheat during the season.

- Over the period of Feb 1-10, 400,300 tons of palm oil were exported from Malaysia, which is 53.9% more than the same period in the previous month (260,080 tons). 96,810 tons of oil (84,230) were exported to the EU, 54,460 tons (38,050) to China, and 44,170 tons (25,340) to India.

- The Argentine government has decided not to change the export taxes on grains under the pressure of expected strikes by farmers. Now, export taxes are:

  • soybeans- 33%
  • soymeal and soyoil- 31%
  • wheat and corn- 12%

- On 10.02.2021, Jordan purchased 60,000 tons of milling wheat of any origin at a price of 270.50 USD/ton C&F and delivery in September.

- Egypt's state-owned company, GASC, has purchased 30,000 tons of soyoil.

- On 11.02.2021, Turkey purchased 235,000 tons of feed corn of any origin at a price of 269 - 274.9 USD/ton and delivery in February - March.

- According to Oil World, in the period August-January, sunseed imports to Turkey reached 355,000 tons compared to 257,000 tons a year earlier. The main exporters of sunseed to Turkey were:

  • Russia- 150,000 tons (46,000)
  • the EU- 70,000 tons (104,000)
  • Moldova- 60,000 tons (55,000)
  • Ukraine- 30,000 tons (5,000)
  • China- 32,000 tons (34,000)

Over the period of August-January, 1.49 million tons of sunseed (1.55) were processed in Turkey and sunseed stocks decreased to 430,000 tons (470,000).
