Grain Highlights 23.09.2022

In order to increase the country's food security, China plans to further reduce the consumption of soy in feed.

- In the week starting on 28.09.2022, the export tax on wheat from Russia will be 2,476.6 rubles/ton (2,668.3 a week earlier). The export tax on barley will be 2,152.6 rubles/ton (2,353.9) and the export tax on corn will be 3,659.9 rubles/ton (3,696.5).

- IKAR raised their forecast for the grain production in Russia in 2022 to 150-152 million tons (147-148 in the previous estimate), including 99 – 100 million tons (97) of wheat.

- According to a forecast of the Oil Union of Russia, the production of oil crops in the country will reach a record 28 million tons in 2022.

- In October, the export tax on Russian sunseed oil will be removed (zeroed) compared to 8,621.3 rubles/ton in September.

- As of 22.09.2022, 6.787 million hectares (61%) of the cereal areas were harvested in Ukraine with an average yield of 3.84 tons/hectare, and 26.1 million tons of grain were harvested. Harvested wheat was 19.2 million tons and harvested barley reached 5.5 million tons. Corn was harvested on 0.5% of the area with an average yield of 4.41 tons/hectare and 99,200 tons of corn were harvested. Sunseed was harvested on 672,000 hectares (14%) at an average yield of 1.92 tons/hectare, with 1.294 million tons of sunseed harvested.

- According to SAFRAS&Mercado data, the export of corn from Brazil will be 7.52 million tons in September (6.9 in August). Since the beginning of the year, exports totaled 26.73 million tons.

- In order to increase the country's food security, China plans to further reduce the consumption of soy in feed. In 2021, soy in feed has decreased to 15.3% from 17.8% in 2017, which saves 11 million tons of soymeal or 14 million tons of soybeans.

- According to a forecast of market operators, the soybean production in India will reach 13.1 million tons in 2022/23 (12.8 in 2021/22). Given the larger production, soyoil imports may be reduced to 3.8-4 million tons.

- In the second half of the year, the export of palm oil from Indonesia is expected to increase compared to the first half, but still overall for 2022 it will remain below the level of 2021, which was 33.7 million tons. Thus, the ending palm oil stocks in the country will grow to 5 million tons (4.1) according to GAPKI's forecast. Palm oil production will reach 45 million tons (46.9).

- Since the beginning of the financial year (March 21), wheat imports in Iran reached 1.7 million tons (+113% compared to the previous year).

- According to data from the September IGC report, world grain production will reach 2.256 million tons in 2022/23 (+8 compared to August and 2.291 in 2021/22). World consumption will reach 2.274 million tons (2.274 and -15), which will mark a decline for the first time since 2015/16. The consumption of fodder grain will decrease. Transition stocks will fall by 3% compared to the previous season to 587 million tons. World grain trade is down from the August estimate to 409 million tons, which is the lowest level for the last three seasons.

- In their September report, IGC analysts raised their forecast for the world wheat production in 2022/23 to 791.9 million tons (778 in August and 781.6 in 2021/22). Wheat production will reach 32.2 million tons in Australia (31 and 36.3), 34.7 million tons in Canada (33 and 22.3), 133.3 million tons in the EU (132 and 138.3), 93.4 million tons in Russia (87.6 and 75), 21.5 million tons in Ukraine (19.4 and 33), 106.8 million tons in India (105 and 109.6), 18 million tons in Argentina (18.5 and 22.1). The world export of wheat will be 192.8 million tons (192.8 and 196.7), including 25 million tons from Australia (24.2 and 26.5), 23 million tons from Canada (22.8 and 15.3), 5.1 million tons from India (4.9 and 8), 36.4 million tons from the EU (37.4 and 32.3) and 12.5 million tons from Argentina (13 and 15.5). World ending stocks will be 285.6 million tons (274.9 and 279.2), including 3.7 million tons in Australia (3.3 and 4.5), 5.2 million tons in Canada (4.7 and 3.7), 12.8 million tons in the EU (11.4 and 16.7), 22.5 million tons in Russia (17.3 and 11.3), 7.6 million tons in Ukraine (5.9 and 7.2) and 16.8 million tons in India (15.2 and 19.5).

- In their September report, IGC analysts forecast a 2022/23 world corn production of 1.167 million tons (1.178 in the previous estimate and 1.218 in 2021/22). Corn production will be 56.2 million tons in the EU (59.6 and 70.3), 354.2 million tons in the United States (364.7 and 383.9) and 29.9 million tons in Ukraine (27.7 and 42.1). The world export of corn will be 172.3 million tons (-1 and 179.2), including 57.8 million tons from the United States (60.3 and 62.9) and 17 million tons from Ukraine (15.5 and 23.5). Ending corn stocks are projected to reach 262.1 million tons (264.7 and 284.7), including 7.5 million tons in Brazil (7.6 and 6.1) and 8.9 million tons in Ukraine (8.4 and 6.9).
