Grain Highlights 19.04.2023

The European Commission has offered compensation to farmers from Eastern Europe in connection with the supply of Ukrainian grain in the amount of 100 million euros.

- From the beginning of the season to 19.04.2023, 40.092 million tons of grain were exported from Ukraine, including 2.115 million tons in April. Wheat exports were 13.734 million tons (736,000), barley exports were 2.393 million tons (117,000) and corn exports were 23.641 million tons (1,259).

- The UN reports that inspections of Ukrainian ships carrying grain have been resumed after a two-day break.

- The European Commission has offered compensation to farmers from Eastern Europe in connection with the supply of Ukrainian grain in the amount of EUR 100 million. This is the second aid package, as the first was 56.3 million euros. Moldova will not restrict the transit of Ukrainian grain. The Bulgarian government is preparing a decision to ban the import of Ukrainian grain. Lithuania is ready to transport 1 million tons of Ukrainian grain through its territory for export to other countries.

- To satisfy domestic demand, Spain needs to import 1.2 million tons of sunseed.

- Yesterday Chicago commodity funds were net buyers of 1,000 contracts of corn, 2,500 contracts of soybeans and 500 contracts of wheat.

- According to Conab data, as of 15/04/2023 in Brazil, 87% of soybean areas have been harvested (+7% for the week). First corn crop has been harvested on 55% of the areas (+4% and 60% a year earlier).

- With a high probability, China will cancel the import tax on Australian barley, which has been 80.5% since May 2020.

- According to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 913,800 tons of feed barley (416,900 in January) and 41,900 tons of malting barley (55,700) were exported from the country in February. Sorghum exports reached 60,600 tons (46,400). Top buyers of feed barley were Saudi Arabia with 277,500 tons, Japan with 150,300 tons, Thailand with 129,300 tons and Vietnam 111,070 tons. The largest buyer of sorghum during the month was China with 56,500 tons.

- In 2022/23, the corn production in India reached 34.6 million tons (33.7 in 2021/22). The government is developing a plan according to which production should increase by 10 million tons over the next five years.
