FAS USDA: Australia harvested revord wheat and barley yield

An FAS USDA report states that Australia has harvested a record wheat yield in the current season (October – September).

Wheat yield is 33 mln tons compared with 24.5 mln tons a year earlier. Barley yield measures 11.0 mln tons (8.593).

The weakened Australian currency as well as the good quality of grains are factors which can help it replace American wheat on the market.

Wheat export will reach 24.5 mln tons (16.124) and Australian wheat will be competitive at a number of markets such as Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and India. It will be more competitive than Black sea wheat.

Barley export will grow to 7.4 mln tons (5.4). Brew barley export will be 2 mln tons.

Sorghum yield will be 1.5 mln tons (2.037). Weak demand pushes farmers to reduce sorghum areas. Sorghum export will be only 0.4 mln tons (1) in the season.

Record wheat yield will engage the full capacity of the country’s infrastructure. ABARE reports that season wheat yield has reached 32.9 mln tons, which is a record. There serious concerns that railway companies do not have the capacilty to transport all the grain to the country's ports. The insufficient investment cause decreased of average speed of the trains, decreased number of train engines and train cars as well as dirupted grain storage at reailway stations. GrainCorp grain operator invested 200 million USD in railway communication and mainland grain storage facilities.
