Every year, Egypt consumes 9.6 million tonnes of wheat to produce subsidized bread. The total wheat consumption in the country reaches 15 million tonnes of wheat per year. In 2016 – 2017 wheat import to the country reached 5.58 million tonnes at 4.44 million tonnes in 2015-2016.

At the last auction, GASC purchased 355,000 tonnes of wheat from Russia and Ukraine, and by the end of 2017-2018 another 7 million tonnes of wheat is expected to be purchased.
