Grain Highlights 26.01.2021

The Ministry of Agriculture of Ukraine and grain traders have agreed that the export of corn from Ukraine will be a maximum of 24 million tons in 2020/21.

- On Monday, commodity funds in Chicago were net buyers of SRW wheat (+11,000), corn (+37,000), soybeans (+22,000), soymeal (+7,000) and soyoil (+5,000).

- Experts from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada have raised their forecast for wheat exports from Canada in 2020/21 by 1.4 million tons to a total of 26.4 million tons while in 2019/20 the figure was 24.5 million tons. In 2021/22, the wheat production is expected to reach 33.7 million tons (35.2 million tons in 2020/21) and exports are projected at 25 million tons.

- The Ministry of Agriculture of Argentina raised its forecast for the wheat production in the country by 200,000 tons to 17.2 million tons. The indicator is 2.55 million tons less than 2019/20.

- Soybean And Corn Advisor has raised its expectation of the soybean production in Brazil from 128 million tons to 129 million tons. The forecast for the soybean production in Argentina remains unchanged at 46 million tons.

- According to the latest forecast of the FAS USDA, in 2020/21 the wheat production in Australia will reach 31 million tons, which is 1 million tons more than the January estimate of the USDA. In 2019/20, the production was 15.8 million tons. Exports will reach 21 million tons (+1 and 11,864). The barley production is projected at 11.5 million tons (+0.5 and +2.5) and exports are predicted to reach 4.7 million tons (-0.3).

- In December, Australia exported 600,000 tons of wheat to China, and since the beginning of January they add up to 110,000 tons. In December, exports to Indonesia and Vietnam reached 264,000 tons.

- During the week of Jan 11-17, sunseed exports from Russia stopped. Since the beginning of the season, exports have reached 508,000 tons (+ 28.2% compared to the previous year). The export of sunseed oil is 33,300 tons (+ 2%), and since the beginning of the season it amounts to 828,400 tons (+ 29%).

- The Russian government has officially changed the export tax on wheat from 25 EUR/ton to 50 EUR/ton for the period 01.03 - 30.06.2021. During the period 15.02 - 28.02.2021, the export tax will be 25 EUR/ton. The export tax on barley is 10 EUR/ton and 25 EUR/ton on corn.

- According to a preliminary estimate by the European Commission, in the week of Jan 18-24, rapeseed imports to the EU were 164,800 tons, which is the lowest level for the season. From the beginning of 2020/21, total rapeseed imports reach a total of 3.9 million tons. Soybean imports for the week were 233,200 tons (227,900 tons a week earlier) and they amount to 8.3 million tons since the start of the season. Sunseed imports were 4,400 tons and since the beginning of the season they add up to a total of 679,000 tons.

- Japan has announced a tender for the purchase of 60,715 tons of milling wheat from Australia with delivery in April.

- On January 20, 2021, Algeria bought 390,000 tons of wheat, which is unusually low. A new tender on 27.01.2021 has been announced.
