Grain Highlights 27.01.2021

As of Jan 27, 2021, 72 ships are waiting to be loaded in the ports of Rostov-on-Don. Everyone is in a hurry to export before the implementation of the export tax on wheat on 15.02.2021.

- According to the European Commission, in the week of Jan 18-24, wheat exports from the EU were 238,800 tons compared to 307,500 tons a week earlier. The largest exporters were:

  • Latvia- 80,800 tons
  • Poland- 78,000 tons
  • France- 32,500 tons
  • Bulgaria- 30,000 tons

Since the beginning of the season, total wheat exports reach 14.5 million tons (-16%) and the largest importers of EU wheat are:

  • Algeria- 3 million tons
  • China- 1.5 million tons
  • Saudi Arabia- 1.3 million tons
  • Nigeria- 1.1 million tons

- On Monday, private exporters from the United States negotiated a deal for the export of 1.36 million tons of corn to China.

- On January 26, 2021, ICE Canada's canola prices reached a thirteen-year high. The growth was caused by the closure of short positions and low canola stocks. What also pushed prices up was the sharp rise in prices of all crops in Chicago.

- As a result of the rainfall, only 0.3% of the soybean area in Brazil was harvested last week. The campaign has advanced to only 0.7% of the area, which is 3.5% less than last year.

- A strike of transport workers and workers in the oil industry of Brazil will begin on 01.02.2021. The strike will block transport activity in the country and the export of agricultural products.

- Exporters have purchased 8.91 million tons of Argentine wheat from the old 2020/21 crop from farmers, which is 89% of the export potential estimated at a total of 10 million tons.

- On Jan 26, 2021, Jordan purchased 120,000 tons of feed barley of any origin at a price of 258.90 - 259 USD/ton C&F and delivery in June - July.

- Saudi Arabia bought 660,000 tons of barley at a price of 277.65 USD/ton and delivery in March-April.

- Algeria has announced a tender for the purchase of 40,000 tons of corn of any origin and delivery within 25.02 - 15.03.2021.

- The Government of Pakistan has approved an additional duty-free quota for the import of 300,000 tons of milled wheat in order to meet strong domestic demand.
