Grain Highlights 02.03.2021

SovEcon raised its forecast for wheat exports from Russia in 2020/21 by 1.2 million tons to a total of 39.1 million tons.

- Yesterday, commodity funds in Chicago were net sellers of 22,500 contracts of corn, 10,000 contracts of soybeans and 7,000 contracts of wheat.

- According to USDA data, as of February 28, 2021, 37% of winter wheat crops in Kansas were in good and excellent condition, which is 3% less than the previous week. 28% of the winter wheat crops were in good and excellent in Texas (-2%) and 46% in Oklahoma (-2%).

- AgRural raises its forecast for the soybean production in Brazil in 2020/21 by 1.3 million tons to 133 million tons. As of February 25, 2021, 25% of the soybean areas were harvested (+10% for the week).

- According to ABARES forecast, in 2021/22 the wheat production in Australia will reach 25 million tons compared to 33.34 million tons in 2020/21. The decline will be caused by the withdrawal of La Niña and reduced rainfall.

- According to ICAR's forecast, 1.7-1.9 million tons of wheat will be exported from Russia in March, compared to over 3.4 million tons in February. The total export of cereals in March will be 2.5 - 2.7 million tons (4 million tons in February). ICAR kept the forecast for the wheat production in Russia in 2021 unchanged at 78 million tons.

- According to Rusagrotrans, 4.01 million tons of wheat were exported from Russia in February, which is a record achievement for the month. In January, wheat exports amounted to 3.37 million tons. Exports of barley reached 272,000 tons (228,000) and corn exports were 230,000 tons (190,000). The total grain export for the month was 4.53 million tons (3.82).

- Since the beginning of the season, 1.224 million tons of sunseed oil (-18% compared to the previous season), 329,000 tons of soyoil (-3%) and 173,000 tons of rapeseed oil (-20%) have been imported in the EU. During the period, 1.09 million tons of sunseed oil, 127,700 tons of soyoil and 51,900 tons of rapeseed oil were delivered from Ukraine.

- In the week ended 28.02.2021, the export of soft wheat from the EU (excluding Great Britain) reached 652.601 tons, which is the highest level for the last three months. Since the beginning of the season, total soft wheat exports reach 17.6 million tons (21.5), including:

  • 3.8 million tons for Algeria
  • 1.8 million tons for China
  • 1.7 million tons for Saudi Arabia
  • 1.4 million tons for Nigeria
  • 1.1 million tons for Morocco

The weekly export of barley was 44,200 tons (95,800), and since the beginning of the season it adds up to 4.9 million tons (5.1). Imports of corn were 139,400 tons (320,400), which is the lowest level since the beginning of the season. Total corn imports reach 10.6 million tons (14.8), including:

  • 4.4 million tons from Brazil
  • 4.1 million tons from Ukraine
  • 1.1 million tons from Serbia
  • 0.4 million tons from Canada
  • 0.2 million tons from Argentina

- During the period of September-January, 914,000 tons of soybeans were delivered to Turkey, including 471,000 tons from Ukraine and 301,000 tons from Brazil .

- Algeria has announced a tender for the purchase of at least 50,000 tons of durum wheat of any origin and delivery in April. Only 60,000 tons of wheat were purchased at the previous auction.

- Egypt's state-owned company GASC has announced a tender for the purchase of 30,000 tons of soybeans and 10,000 tons of sunseed oil with delivery on May 1-15. A domestic tender was also announced for the purchase of 3,000 tons of soyoil and 2,000 tons of sunseed oil with delivery in April.

- Taiwanese feed manufacturer MFIG has purchased 65,000 tons of Argentine feed corn at a price of 290.20 USD/ton C&F and delivery within 24.04 - 13.05.2021.

- Iran has announced a tender for the purchase of 400,000 tons of feed barley with delivery in March - April.
