Strategie Grains lowers its forecast for grain yield in the EU in 2017

Due to the warm and dry weather in some European countries in the recent weeks, Strategie Grains analysts to lowered their forecast for grain crop in the EU in 2017.

Rainfall in May stabilized the situation for the soft wheat in France, Germany and the UK. There is still a threat to the crops in Spain. Weather is dry in countries from Eastern Europe and the northern parts of Italy.

The forecast for grain yield in the EU is down by 1.1 million tonnes compared to the May forecast, to 141.6 million tonnes. The result is 4% higher than last year. The decline is affecting crops in Spain, Germany and France.

The forecast for barley yield in the EU is down by 1.6 million tonnes compared to May, to 58 million tonnes, which is by 3% less than the yield in 2016. The decline is affecting crops in Spain, Germany and France.

Given the expected higher than normal temperatures, there is an opportunity for further projections.

Forecast for corn yield is lowered by 100,000 tonnes, down to 60 million tonnes.
