Spain will increase soft wheat import by 43%

Spain will increase soft wheat import by 43% in 2017-2018 due to reduced domestic production as a result of drought in the country.

Forage production in the country is in major need of import.

Agrofinmarket forecasts that import of soft wheat during the season will reach 5.6 million tonnes, up 450,000 tonnes over the previous forecast and 1.8 million tonnes more than 2016-2017.

Spain's soft wheat crop will reach 4.15 million tonnes, down 800,000 tonnes from the previous forecast and 38% less than the crop in 2016. The IGC's forecast is 5.1 million tonnes.

Agrofinmarket raised its forecast for barley import in Spain by 100,000 tonnes to 725,000 tonnes and of corn by 200,000 tonnes to 6.88 million tonnes, up 22% over last year.
