Grain Highlights

Corn harvest in the US lags behind schedule significantly. As of October 29, 2017 harvest is completed on 54% of the areas given 73% a year earlier and 72% on average for the last five years. 66% of the areas are in good and excellent condition at 74% a year earlier.

Wheat

- Japan announced a tender for the purchase of 144,600 tonnes of milling wheat from the US, Canada and Australia for December 2017 – January 2018 shipment.

- According to USDA, as of October 29, 2017 sowing of winter wheat in the US is completed on 84% of the planned areas at 85% a year earlier and 87% at on average for the last five years. 65% of the crops have sprouted  (69% и 68%). 52% of the crops are in good and excellent condition at 58% a year earlier.

- Last week, Saudi Arabia purchased 484,000 tonnes of milling wheat with protein content of 12.5%. Probably the wheat is purchased mainly from France. At present, in Germany there is a shortage of quality wheat for internal consumption. In the previous years, much of the wheat purchased from Saudi Arabia came from Germany.

- On October 29, 2017. India delivered a batch of wheat to Afghanistan. This is the first supply of the negotiated quantity of 1.1 million tonnes.

- As of October 31,2017, 27.3 million hectares (98.9%) of wheat were harvested in Russia, 87.9 million tonnes of wheat were harvested at average yield of 3.22 mt/ ha (2.79).

 

Grain

- As of October 27, 2017 in Ukraine 12.5 million tonnes of corn are collected from 2.62 million hectares, which is 58% of the plan. Average crop yield is 47.8 bushels / acre.

- As of October 30, 2017, in Ukraine, 12,687 million hectares of grain crops are harvested, which is 87% of the plan. 50.943 million tonnes of grain are harvested at average yield of 4.02 mt/ ha.

- As of October 30, 2017 in Ukraine sowing of grain crops is completed on 6,673 million hectares (94% of the plan), incl. 5.848 million hectares of wheat (95%), 781,000 hectares of winter barley (84%).

- As of October 31, 2017 in Russia 45.2 million hectares under grain crops cultivation were harvested  (96.2% of the areas), 135.4 million tonnes of grain were harvested at average yield of 2.99 mt / ha (2.67). With barley - 7.7 million hectares (97.5%) are harvested, 21.5 million tonnes of barley were harvested at average yield of 2.79 mt/ ha (2.35). With corn - 1.8 million hectares (61.1%) are harvested , 8.5 million tonnes of corn were harvested at average yield of 4.84 mt/ ha (5.6). The sowing of winter grain crops is completed on 16.7 million hectares (95.8%).

 

Oil crops and vegetable oils

- In 2017, in the key Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, the profitability of soybean growing will decrease. The slow down in sowing will further aggravate the indicator. The lag will be associated with more farming, more preparations and lower yields. According to Imea , production costs for the afrmers will reach 7.3 USD/ bushel. In order thee costs to be covered, farmers will need yield of at least 43.5 bushels / acre. The average yield in the current season is 47 bushels / acre. February contracts for sale of soybean are at price of 8.15 USD / bushel given 10.2 USD / bushel a year earlier.

- As of October 27, 2017, in Ukraine, 10.9 million tonnes of sunflower from 5.6 million hectares (94% of the area) were harvested at average yield of 1.96 mt/ ha.

- As of October 27, 2017 3.1 million tonnes of soybean were harvested in Ukraine from 1.6 million hectares (82%), at average yield of 1.89 mt/ ha.

- As of October 31, 2017 5.2 million hectares of sunflower were harvested in Russia, 8.5 million tonnes (66.8 percent) of sunflower were harvested at average yield of 1.55 mt/ ha (1.59).
